The hell is the deal with the assumption that Bruce can't have sex? Is this something from the comics? Everything I can find indicates that in the comics he only hulks when he's experiencing negative emotions. He flips out when he's upset/angry/scared, not so much when he's chilling out listening to NPR and drinking a nice microbrew (getting a blowjob, you know, whatever).

I have a couple days off, I might have to type up something to convince people how right I am.

eta: trufax--I am so into Avengers that I'm not even shitting in filters and rolling up to lay my truthiness on people I disagree with. Rock on, Loki shippers!

In the first Hulk movie, Bruce and Betty try to make out with him wearing a heart rate monitor. His pulse kept getting too close to the Hulk threshold so they never got past second base.

I FINALLY SAW THE MOVIE!!!!

And even though I have never been a fan of the Hulk, I loved Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. Not in, like, a slashy way though, somehow. I just loved him! And Tony! And HAWKEYE, OMG, AMAZING.

I am still processing, but YAY MOVIE!

Do you call it slash when you want to ship someone with yourself? No?

I was on the fence with Tony in the Iron Man movies, yeah, unpopular. But I ADORED him in Avengers. I think it's him being balanced with everyone else.

But I'd welcome your treatise on why Bruce is not celibate.

I'm actually most inclined to think Bruce mostly does one night stands with randoms because emotional attachment is much much worse for him because it leads to jealousy/protectiveness/sorrow which leads to HULK SMASH. I mean, even in the movie he's clearly already attached to the team, which must give him pause when he sees the footage of him saving Tony.

People are confusing Bana's Bruce/Hulk with Norton's Bruce/Hulk is the problem. Norton's version is Avengers!Verse (i.e., the Bruce/Hulk that Mark based his performance off of & the one that laid the foundation of where Bruce got his powers, why he's running from SHIELD & the government, etc.) and that Hulk/Bruce can totally have sex. So, yeah, I have no idea what the hell either.

The Ed Norton Hulk movie is officially canon for Avengers. You may or may not consider it so, but between Tony Stark's cameo and the extra (god, I cannot remember on which DVD) with Coulson discussing the Harlem incident, that movie is clearly meant to be Hulk's past canon for this Avengers movie. I think the recasting was due to...personality conflicts.

And they establish in that that Bruce changes not based on anger, but on his heart rate--if his heart rate gets above a certain amount. Which is why he's gone all zen, and is, I believe, why he says he's angry all the time. This is different from previous Hulks, but I think the theory they're going on.

One of my friends pointed out, though, that the Hulk characterization was the most inconsistent across movies. I just think he can have sex--as long as his heartrate doesn't go up. More of a slow burn tease...and Tony would totally take the risk just to prove he could.

I think I might have to just AU the hell out of this because I can't sit through the last movie. I tried it, but I was so bored I fell asleep.

I appreciate you for breaking it down for me, though. I had no idea Tony was in it! What happens?

BRUCE WAS MY FAVORITEST IN THE AVENGERS FILM. And then Hawkeye and then Tony and, well, I loved the whole thing and have been inhaling fic.

I'm with you on the WTF that Bruce can't have sex. I know he *does* in lots of fic, but I've read just as much cockblocking. Very frustrating since one of my 'ships has ended up being Clint/Bruce.

WRITE IT WRITE IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTT. I'll read it. :-)

It's how Norton's Banner's heart rate factors in, plus (I think) the virgin woobie ~~werewolf~~ idea. Because cleaarly Tony must show Bruce the ways of the flesh, and Bruce has not had sex for years, living a life of innocence and saving people, IDK. [/sarcasm]

I am so mad and hungry for Tony/Bruce fic that I've read basically ALL of it, no matter his inability to have sex in so many. alas! I just want to read about them doing science experiments and sometimes fucking (but Tony is still a genius playboy and has Pepper and others; Bruce had to have some brief relationships--or one night stands-- on his travels) and Bruce being a rumpled hotass with his sense of control. I also think of Ruffalo saying he looked to the Bill Bixby version, where he was the every man but was able to have a sense of humor about things and smile ~~and have sex~~.

Everyone ever has already discussed this, but....

It was definitely NortonHulk who had the heartrate thing, which was his working theory as to how he could control himself. If he could just keep his heartrate under control, then he wasn't in danger of hulking out. So there was a scene were he stopped an intense makeout session because his heartrate monitor was beeping at him, but it's not like he was starting to turn green or something, he just didn't want to risk it because it was his theory. But then at the end of the movie he was meditating and seemed to get some kind of control over his Hulking out, which was pretty much confirmed by Avengers. In Avengers, he either Hulks out/discusses it happening twice that wasn't under his control: once when he tried to commit suicide and a bullet didn't cut it, and once under Loki's influence. On the other hand, when he wasn't under Loki's influence he had his transformation under control. So I would posit that while the NortonHulk is canon for RuffaloHulk, the heartrate thing no longer applies, because he's got innner peace or whatever and thus controls his transformation. He could get his freak on all he wanted and as long as he didn't actually give himself a heart attack, he'd be fine.

I really appreciate you fanwanking this out for me. I think I would go so far as to say that he realized the heartrate thing was just wrong all the way around and that it was more about triggers--so yeah, when he was triggered his heartrate goes through the roof, but just because his heartrate goes up doesn't mean he'll hulk out. The correlation is there, but it's a necessary situation.
