syncope at 09:30pm on 11/08/2012So. I had a very interesting day.
I had a big family get together with a bunch of my Florida and other out of state relatives in town. Mostly we had a fish fry and watched the Olympics. But it was a special day, right?
My family tends to skew left. Of course I'm unapologeticly socialist and would never vote for a repug if forced at gun-point (ok, maybe). I have a cousin who I'm pretty close to who is a weird mix of conspiracy theorist and paranoid wanker. Love conquers all, y'all.
Invited to my my family shindig were various friends of the family in the area (I live in Boehner's constituency). My very own mother who is one of those baby boomers who always goes on about ~the 60's and how radical they were has been mumbling about voting for Romney (really against Obama, let's be honest).
This morning before the happening began I said to my mom "So, still thinking about Romney?" She made a non-committal noise.
Background: just about everyone I know works in healthcare. Just about is almost not even covering it. I guess I know three or four people who don't. Ryan wants to cut Medicare to the point where it's some other beast. This would be disastrous for the careers of people who make a pretty good living off of elder care. This includes my mother (gerontologist).
So we're watching the nightly news after dinner (god, why) and my mom's best friend (same job) says in outrage to me when I make a really cutting comment about Ryan "You're not really going to vote for Obama again, are you?" She was seriously SHOCKED, APPALLED. Her entire lifestyle and living wage depends on Medicare. She could NOT MAKE HER MORTGAGE PAYMENT OR PAY FOR HER KIDS' COLLEGE WITHOUT IT. Yet, she is so inculcated that Obama is a dickwad that she can't see that these other guys would happily fuck her over to cut taxes for the rich.
THIS is the problem with the electorate right now. They are so ignorant of political realities that they just accept that Obama is the debt devil. Because Obama was behind the financial collapse. I'm sure she doesn't even know what the SEC is or who Alan Greenspam is.
My cousin is just a nut. I have two libertarian relatives and I feel the requisite shame. The weird part is that they're both actually intelligent, so I have no comprehension of wtf is wrong with them. We all live in swing states.
The idea that Rand is still influencing people in any real way blows my mind.
Keep in mind that my family are military families across the board and we all had "socialized healthcare" in our youth and the widows still do. MIND BLOWN.
