Yesterday I discovered my mom has a 50 Shades of Grey t-shirt. The shirt has what I thought at a glance was an AIDS ribbon on it. It reads Laters, babe.
Me: Oh, is that some new AIDS campaign? Weird slogan, but I appreciate the sentiment.
Mom: This is a 50 Shades of Grey shirt. [weird "cool" voice] LATERS, BABE.
Me: [managed not to burst into tears]
Mom: [really proud]
Me: So much is wrong here I'm not even going to engage the blob.
I'd also like to report from the war front that these books appear to be a gateway drug into a whole world of super shitty "kinky" books targeted at old ladies and children. Where do I donate to stop this pestilence?

This afternoon I finished N K Jemisin's latest book. In the way of all fangirl addicts, that made me quite depressed because now there's not MORE. I know a lot of people read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, but you should read the rest of that series and and the next duo of books (related to one another and not to the first series). Her imagination is absolutely staggering. If you're an aspiring writer, you might take up sculpture instead, though, because the world building in all of her books might give you an inferiority complex.
I can't recommend her writing highly enough. (I never rec fiction, consider.)

Another reason you should read metafilter Everyone's fled to tumblr, here's another place to waste time not lj.

Did I miss anything in the last couple weeks? Bring the fic links, babe.
