I got a new stethoscope this week: this is what passes for interesting for me lately. I have a rep for a being a fan of orange, but that's not even why I got that color. Hell no, I got orange so some asshole can't steal my stethoscope. Trust me, this is a huge issue. Guess why I needed a new one? BINGO!
( Went to see Captain America. )
Now my remarks about the teenagers I know and fandom.
What really amazes me is how integrated their lives are with fandom. Internet culture and kids, that's just to be assumed. But what seems to be happening is that kids raised post-internet sort of turn everything into a fandom. Expressing the nuance of this is a bit difficult. I think it's like how when I was a kid (like 11) me and my friends pretended to be rock stars and we dated bands we liked, but now for teens and kids the pool of people to pretend with is infinite. That's facile, but the concept works to get my point across.
The other thing that really cracks me up about these kids is that they talk about fan culture like EVERYONE IN THE WORLD KNOWS WHAT IT IS. So when we were going to the movies the other day my cousin's one friend and another got into a heated debate about OCs in fic. I opined that it depended on the writer whether and OC can work, and the kid who had the opinion that OCs were always horrible basically looked down his nose at me but didn't say out loud "yeah, but you're OLD." He wanted to, though, I could tell.
Incidentally, I have never talked to these kids about being in fandom. Part of the worldview of youth is that naturally their experiences are universal, so it's not surprising I know about these things. Just not as an expert because I'm an adult.
I await the day when my young cousins and I are in the same fandom and they bust up here. I know they're all on Deviant Art and LJ. Hilarity shall ensue.
Ok! Back under my rock.
