The annual Eyes On the Prize airing is happening now on my local PBS station. If you've never seen it, I bet it's on youtube by now. If you're American, you need to watch the whole shebang at least once. It's your recent history and the truth about our country. Don't let yourself get too congratulatory about "how far we've come" when you watch it, though. Yes we have, no we haven't. Keep in mind how recent this history is.
When I was a kid, I never understood why Americans got so self-righteous about South Africa. I still don't get that.
We're all narcissistic on a certain level, and it's hard to keep in mind that what we think about as "the past" was part of the living history of people around us. Maybe you've never asked, but there's a good chance people in your life have segregation stories. Ask.
