syncope: (baby octipus)

So are we going to round up the BP Execs and the morons at the EPA and send them to Gitmo as domestic terrorists?

I'd like to see ONE mainstream media story about the effects of the oil spill on cetaceans and other marine mammals.

Just one personal anecdote: do you know how sea turtles hatch? They swarm out of mounds and scuttle towards the water. A lot of the time, this is too taxing for them, so they die in the surf or on the beach because sea birds circle and pick them off one by one. There are programs pretty much everywhere that sea turtles hatch where volunteers hang out at the beach waiting for the turtles to start climbing out of the sand and then they help each baby turtle clamber into the waves and some wade out for a while with them to make sure the surf doesn't get them.

Because of the destruction of the coast in the last twenty years, traditional turtle hatcheries have already been destroyed because barrier islands have been reshaped by tidal waves and the rest of the crap that happens in hurricanes and tropical storms.

I have some pretty special memories of watching entire, four generation families with toddling children and elderly ladies in crazy swim suits and huge straw hats scuttling in the surf chasing baby sea turtles. Imagine a white sand beach covered in tiny turtles jittering on new, unused limbs zig-zagging around overly helpful people laughing and gesturing to one another. Brown people, white people, immigrants, rednecks, teenagers startled out of their jaded cynicism by the joy of doing something selfless.

My own home has been pretty seriously altered by climate change, so I doubt these programs still even exist there. But this oil spill is so devastating that I have to imagine there won't really be any turtles to save anyway.
