I think everyone knows my eyerolling mentality when discussions of the legality of fanworks pop up, but who isn't laughing at Diana Gabaldon today? In case you missed it you make her BARF! The fandom_wank plot summaries of her work makes me think I need to read the books to make fun of them.
Seriously, how can anyone think of fanfiction as anything other than free advertising by this point? I am more baffled by this lady than offended (like I care about a stranger's opinion anyway). I think Jim Butcher's approach (linked on f_w) is the most rational. I can sympathize with authors who are worried about copyright when it comes to fans linking to fanworks--that is the concern about being sued by fan creators who come up with an idea similar to something you (the original author) use later. (Has this ever actually happened, though?) since that shit is why Warren Ellis pulled his lj (RIP the only blog of a "celebrity" I ever read). But Jim Butcher found a classy way around that (and lol excellent way to rip people off back!).
I'm sure you're really interest to hear that I got sucked into reading Merlin fic yesterday out of the dead blue. WHYY??????
In related news, I hate it when there's a small fandom where the majority of writers I won't read for wanky fannish dickery reasons congregate. That makes wasting time read made up stories about some dudes HARD, ok? (I laugh thinking about how many people feel the same way about me. I know how you feel, fanpoodle, I earnestly do.)
I keep meaning to link to this and haven't made any Vampire Diaries posts to drop it into, so I'll stick it in this random post. 8 Reasons Sam/Dean fans should watch The Vampire Diaries. Tbh, I think wit the exception of recent *developments* on SPN, I think VD is hands down way gayer.
And now the brilliant Stoney recaps the plots of DG's books for you!
