syncope at 09:52am on 12/04/2010I have to say that figure skating fandom just delights me. Mostly that comes from the fact that several people are writing 100K epic crack fics in the kinkmeme, several of which star a possibly brain damaged Evan Lysacek (the appeal is that he's challenged? Idk), but today that comes in the form of 17 yr olds freaking out that Johnny Weir might be straight. Which part of this I find the most amusing is unclear--making out in a club while drunk indicates anything besides that you're drunk? that this is further evidence that some people really believe only what they read online? the insane tendency of segments of the youth culture to prize homosexuality due to (in my unscientific assumption) the influence of yaoi/manga/fanfiction?
I mean, clearly a huge part of why skating is so popular is because a lot of people who love the gays were informed by the Olympics that they've been missing out on a WHOLE GAY THING that jumped into their laps screaming OH DADDY while wearing sequins. I'm mostly ambivalent (with a side order of eye-rolly) about this fetishization of gay men by the children. I suppose it's the next stop on the Normalization Train, so there's that. ...and I like Johnny Weir 'cause he's a giant queen, too, so I guess I'll just leave my rock pile undisturbed. Where does one even begin to educate these children, anyway?
One of the things I find interesting in the comments there is the thread of "gender =/= sexuality!!" being screeched by people who are active participants in a community that basically exists to gay upthe world skating to begin with. I don't pay enough attention to the posters there to know if the same people being all "ever heard of bisexuality???" or "you so ignorant" are the same people who out Evan Lysacek on twitter or not, so.
(Also, because of that community, I've taken to calling Evan Lysacek Orange Bro irl...that would be while I watch Dancing With the Stars...what has become of me?)
Anyway, there are pictures of Johnny Weir kissing a girl there, if you're into that.
eta: wait, the vampire bigbang word count min is only 10K words? Can I combine that w/ my unfinished help_haiti fics?
