My opinion on this can be seen many times over in the comments. You've probably already seen that link. I think the poster was well-meaning, and her sentiments are familiar to me as I've heard them many many times previously.
To be quite honest, my immediate response to Prop 8 passing was "fuck you, Mormons!" For some reason it's unacceptable to discuss that the passage of this law and others like it aren't about race (as has been belabored by assholes) or class or anything other than simple bigotry by rightwing "christian" dickwads. I'm sorry, if your religion tells you that love is wrong and should be repressed, you need to look into what that means about your religion.
Sometimes the American regard for religious faith just boggles my mind. I know it's our history and we're fed on it from the moment we walk through public school doors (remember making Pilgrim-inspired art in elementary school? I sure as hell do). But we're all taught things in our youth that we later come to realize were utterly WRONG. Our history is one of religious zealotry, not freedom of worship, let's clear the air on that one.
There are people in MY OWN RELIGION that are also bigots. It happens in all religions. However, for whatever reason when it's Christianity (or a religion that claims to be such with dubious rights to such claims, didn't read about Native American tribes of Israel in any bible in my house) we're not allowed to point out that they're hiding behind their scriptures to be discriminatory? And why is that? For some reason religion is a trump card on prejudice? Interesting. I guess I need to start my own religion where one of the tenants is "if you disagree with us you will be stapled to death in the afterlife by giant pandas!"
Such utter bullshit. I'm sorry, folks, human rights are not dictated from heaven. Your religion shouldn't impact my life. You can worship a turtle, and I don't care, but don't tell me the turtle says I need to wear red shoes. I don't listen to my own religion when it tells me I can't eat a cheeseburger, why should I listen to your stupid turtle regarding my shoes?
I don't believe in placating people who hate me. I certainly am not reasonable w/ Christians who think the only way into a decent afterlife is through Jesus Christ, so why in the HELL would I come cap in hand to middle class white people who are scandalized by butt sex and eating pussy? I do not think so.
