You know I don't quite understand why so many of the political journos on the internet seem to have bought the Obama "bipartisan" talking point. Look at who he picked for his CoS--the least bipartisan mofo he could lay his hands on. He picked someone who routinely says in a nonjoking way "Fuck them" about Republicans. That's not a hand across the isle kind of move, and don't think that the scrambling GOP didn't read that signal loud and clear.
I get that people want a new direction and fairness and balance and blah blah let's hold hands and get along, but personally? Anyone who harps about late term abortions, supports the war in Iraq, hates gays, and/or is indifferent to or supports prayer in schools and the Ten Commandments in public spaces is my political enemy and I don't want to reach across the isle to them I want to shove them down an open elevator shaft. I fully support the signal that the Democratic party has remembered how to throw a haymaker.
Speaking of those first up against the wall: Fuck you, Joe Lieberman! The Homeland Security chair needs to go to a real Democrat who cares about civil rights. Let the bastard leave the caucus!
Hahahaha Okay! I was just reading comment threads on alternet (why why why) and it never fails to amuse me how so many of my fellow far lefties just don't seem to understand how government functions. Yes, appoint Marxists to the cabinet, great plan! Lament Emanuel and Pelosi's strategies, because clearly they're unsuccessful! Kucinich? Come on, liberals, stop being so stupid! Hils as AG? ARE YOU ON DRUGS? Poor Hils, demoted to AG from her Senate seat by well meaning idiot liberals.
I am the first person to curse Clinton's name into the ground. My disdain for the Clinton machine/cronies isn't a secret. However, we have to be rational here and acknowledge that experience counts for a lot when you're running one of the most important countries in the world. Do we really want a bunch of people who have NO IDEA what they're doing running around with the power of demi-gods? Personally, I'll assess each candidate's value individually WITH regard to their Clinton taint, but the simple fact is if you're a big time Dem in the current political slip stream you probably have some association with one of or both Clintons. AND? Jesus, get with the program! This strange idea that Obama's going to come in and I guess populate the WW with people from Habitat and Oxfam and the AFL-CIO is totally nuts. He has to have known commodities who can throw punches on his team because otherwise the House leadership is going to elbow him into the bushes and just do whatever the hell they want. Not even Clinton stood up well for himself in his first administration--you think Obama stands a snowball's chance against Nancy P? HAHAHHA Yeah, ok, go back to watching the Home Shopping Network or whatever, CPAN's too involved for you.
If you wanted a Democratic president w/ the backbone to do the heavy lifting themselves wrt getting in the Congress's face, H Clinton was your candidate. Obama has to have intermediaries do that job. And that's OKAY. It's not unusual and not something to worry about. He'll pick his team and we'll go from there.
I think what the reactionaries on the left are missing is that the centrist rhetoric is RHETORIC. Of course Pelosi talks about the center and blah blah consensus--she had to w/ a Repug WH. Can we inaugurate the damned President and reconvene Congress and see what the hell happens with broth Legislative branches AND the Executive branch before we start tossing Obama under the wheels?
So far my favorite crackpot speculation on the Cabinet is Jimmy Carter for S of State. hahahaha OMGWTFBBQ! A lot of spec on Native Americans for Interior--I think that'd be a spectacular call.
Last night Jenn described my fixation on the Cabinet as "it's like how some people speculate over draft picks [in sports]." I think that's fair.
I love how the Right's pulling a win out of this w/ the "Obama only won by five points" bullshit. Yeah, ok, guys! It sucks to lose, doesn't it?
eta: MSNBC says Emanuel took the CoS job. And let it begin!
