syncope: (jon and spencer)
As someone from the Gulf Coast whose entire family for infinity has been on the Gulf Coast, global warming really is a personal concern. It makes me so so incredibly anxious and depressed to realize that my home might soon be uninhabitable for all intents and purposes. We're on the cusp even now, and I can't imagine it's going to get better. We were just watching The Weather Channel and Hanna and the CLUSTER of three/four tropical depressions behind Gustav just make me sick. It's just the first week of September. Not even that.

When I was a kid we had to cancel Halloween because a category 3 storm hit my hometown. The big complaint? Canceling trick or treat! It was an epic disaster, everyone was so INSANELY MAD. People in hurricane alley have a different way of looking at storms, which I expressed poorly on another post. When I went home after Katrina, it was with the absolute belief that this was just the beginning. It's going to be be so much worse. I said to Jenn tonight "good thing there's only one city on the Gulf Coast" and I meant that. There's Galveston, the Mississippi coast cities (destroyed by Katrina already), Mobile, Pensacola and Panama City on the northern GC. Galveston and Panama City are due, the rest of that area? They've been assaulted for the last ten years. My hometown was decimated by a storm that didn't make the news because Pensacola's sort of a shitty town in the middle of nowhere and there were no soundbites in it.

I've been thinking lately pretty seriously about moving home (for good, probably) and it's so depressing to realize that's just not realistic--not for work concerns or personal reasons, but because it's just a matter of time before the whole fucking place is washed away. I don't really think people can understand this unless they're from some place full of natural disasters. In some way it almost feels like being from Atlantis or some shit.

In other news, Diddy on FNMTV is a thing of glory.
