My allergies are kicking my ass today. I'm not supposed to *have* allergies here. I call bullshit.

We went to see The Hold Steady last night. You'd think that would be the big event of the day--you'd be wrong.

The Hold Steady are currently my favorite band. I that sums that up, right? I went to see my favorite band!!!

So, about that: the other day I was talking about getting a Boys Like Girls t-shit (this is a very shitty band) because the shirts are SO HIDEOUS and it cracks me up. Jenn said "yeah, I don't think I could manage that level of irony." and in response I said "yeah, that whole thing about me hating on hipsters is the biggest irony of them all." In case it was in doubt, yeah, I *am* one. (If you'd ever seen me, this would be very clear--I have bangs and wear striped shirts...um, a lot. I am in fact wearing on RIGHT NOW.)

I only mention this because The Hold Steady is one of the BIGGEST cred bands among asshole hipsters. Seriously. The band is self-referential, needlessly busy in their instrumentation, have a chubby bald guy for the singer, and live in the detested Billyburg.

(I just got the most hilarious email ever. It's a fictionalized account of a meeting I had w/ a bunch of lametards the other day. It's fic about a meeting! Written by my BOSS. Wait, wait, ok, it's not even fictional...it's just editorializing the meeting in a stylized way. He's sort of insane, in case you were wondering--insane but brilliant. Sadly, brilliant is a bit misplaced in this gig!)

I unapologetically LOVE this band. I can't even tell you how much. They have these ridiculously over the top songs about THE SCENE and getting drunk and high--that's about it! There are a few songs about having shitty relationships, one about fucking in a venue bathroom (we all know this is my very favorite random joke), another about...wait that one also is about getting high...um, and THAT one is about getting drunk...ok I'm naming my vampire epic after one of their songs? They lace religious imagery and metaphors throughout their lyrics. DO YOU SEE HOW THEY RULE?

The lead singer's a chubby bald guy!

So we roll up into this show w/ huge expectations. I try never to get excited about anything (see: above about me being a disaffected hipster), but I was totally keyed up about this shit. I've also discovered the fastest way to invite random people in LA to talk to you is to wear a comic book related t-shirt, but that's an aside I didn't make parenthetical. The place was predictably packed. But we got THE BEST view. Then the show rocked my face off.

That's my review: they rocked my face off. And I bought a t-shirt. I do NOT buy merch (unless it's hideous, as above, I also have a really horrible Cobra Starship hoody that I LOVE).

And then we locked ourselves out of the apartment with no phones. A-yep! Luckily, a neighbor was still up at dumb o'clock in the morning and we got to call a locksmith. Who opened the door by banging a key with a screwdriver into the lock. Can we discuss this? Has anyone ever seen this previously? Tapping a key into a lock with a screwdriver? See, this was new to me personally. Can I set myself up as a locksmith with this key technique? I think he was in the Russian mafia.

So to sum up: The Hold Steady is awesomer than the world and Russian mafia dudes are running dodgey locksmith companies. That was my night.

(Jenn and I are reading a fic at the same time and IMing each other bits of it, like you do, and there was a line about Goth Flakes--as opposed to say bran flakes--and she said "You would totally eat that if it was real." And all I could say is TRUFAX I WOULD! Also, the fic is one of Valerie's, and she's quite brill.)
