I've decided that my newest wildly inappropriate crush on a Random Dude will be on Steven Moffat. I will retain Steven Smith as well, but I now have TWO Stevens to coo about for no other reason than they are awesome.
(Steven Moffat is the new head of the Doctor Who machine.)
On our way out of the Convention Center to head to supper yesterday it occurred to me I should have kept my receipts and written the trip off on my taxes. I'm so very bad at remembering shit like that. ARG! I managed to wedge a ten minute conversation into the trip that would have made the entire thing work-related (although there is something to be said for the entire enterprise being work-related, so whatever).
Oh WELL! Next year I plan to plan better. I hadn't intended to go at all, you see.
Those of you who don't even know I watch the show will be surprised to hear I went to Comic Con for the Doctor Who and Torchwood panels. And to see Cathy, of course (she drew me a unicorn standing over the dead body of who I have decided is Pete Wentz--I'll try to figure out a way to scan this work of genius for the world to see).
My friend is a DW fan and at what can only be termed the last minute said "oh, I'd like to go to Comic Con to see RTD!" and I said "OKAY! My friend's going to be there, so COOL!" And so, lo, our really half-assed plans were made.
I'm sure there's bound to be video of Barrowman at the TW panel up on youtube by now, right? Maybe of the Naoko Mori duet from "Miss Saigon?" If not, I'm sure it'll be up soon enough.
I know how you people are: ( I'm cutting the rest. )
Also, the spoilers floating around the JB confirmed he was in talks to play Captain America in the panel are FALSE. He said nothing of the kind. He said he was in talks for unnamed projects that were not Captain America. Fans are not a good source in intel!
And because I was curious about Virgin Comics, we went to the Stan Lee and Grant Morrison panel...where we learned NOTHING about Virgin Comics. I think that's a tad counterproductive to their marketing strategy since Comic Con attendees are sort of their target audience. Stan Lee was even more ott than usual. I think they need to sedate him before they let him in public. It's pretty clear that GM is the creative side of this venture and SL is a figurehead. A BAD ONE. Comics fans know all about this dude, so why hire him for comic cred? Totally boneheaded suit move. Nice going, idiots. Grant Morrison was probably enough of a name to float around for the launch of this company. Idk, I suppose maybe fanBOYS feel differently about Stan Lee? That wasn't the impression I got from a work colleague later on when N and I were telling him about the panel (he dissed SL without prompting for stealing all of Jack Kirby's glory). GM is one of my favorites, so I expect I'll be checking out Virgin Comics when they get off the ground--if they're doing anything besides animated shorts targeted at cell phones, that is. Why is this suddenly the big thing? Is this some kind of vertical integration where the mobile service providers are in the same conglomerate with the media companies? I mean, with Virgin this is certainly the case, but there was another case where content was only going to be provided to iPhone and iPod Touch users, so in that case I can't be certain.
Other Comic Con news: I fucking hate Frank Miller MORE and MORE. I stood in front of the The Spirit booth glaring until N pulled me away. I LOVE The Spirit and I wish that FM would stay away from things I like. Fucking douchebag.
I bought Will Eisner's "The Plot" which is graphic novel retelling of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" (and if you don't know what that is, google yourself into an education). The forward was written by Umberto Eco. !!! Be still my heart, for reals. (Comics fans will see that the proceeding paragraph and this one are directly related.)
Ok, I should eat something.
