I started my period today. I think that's why I got in arguments on the internet yesterday on TWO journals? One here where I steadfastly refused to 1. explain myself completely and 2. drop it over the word "gyp" which then lead the person who (it would appear) loathes me as a vile, loathsome, racist toad upon a very short acquaintance, to post in her journal quoting me and denouncing me as a vile loathsome racist. I am only too aware that the only way to win in Internetland when someone rebukes you is to say mea maxima culpa, I shall never transgress thusly again, thank you for enlightening me with you random drive-by educational pamphlet! The amusing part is that she thinks Cathy is also a vile, loathsome racist. Me and Cathy, the racist oppressors of Internetland! I suppose this could be played as an amusing instance of People On the Internet Not Getting It for $2000, Alex, but mostly I'm just meh. Ok, finally someone has something to hate me over that's semi-grounded in reality (I did make some flip commentary about the word gyp!) and not just free-floating aggression over my characterization of Eminem turned into invective over my misspelling of commonly used words.
I guess it's PSA time: don't comment in my journal if you don't want your remarks quoted randomly out of context by people who are offended by me.
Look, I have wank that's all my own and not about SPN! Aren't you impressed, fl?
For the record, Julia will explain how I feel about the word "gyp," since I was unable to:
Julia: So. there is an argument to be said that you don't consider "gyp" as intense a slur as "n*****" Which also has to do with many people not knowing there is a connection to "gypsies"
Unlike "jewing someone down" which has obvious Jew connection. (link to Obama at a Native American rally)
It's the internet, so I get that the computer causes people to not comprehend subtle differences, nuances, and critical thinking, but come THE FUCK ON. I did a scientific poll of my friends, and lurkers support me in email.
I'm torn between never using this word again and saying it at every possible opportunity. In reality, we all know I will never say it again, but I'm just so fucking annoyed. I think I wouldn't have been so annoyed by this if the post itself hadn't explicitly said, "this is a post about word usage and meaning." How much more explicit can I be?
I do suppose there is some actual commentary to be made here. Often, when you're surfing around a social networking platform like lj, you'll encounter a conversation happening that you're observing from a vacuum. You don't really know these people or their relationship, but you make assumptions about their comments from your own life experience. In my case, I have many real life friends who hang out here and say stuff that you don't understand, because you don't really know us. This happens to me as an observer other places. Lj creates a false sense of intimacy and immediacy. There are tiers of acquaintance on your flist, and sometimes we feel totally valid in shooting our mouths off to someone because this platform has evolved various regulations and formalities that allows it. However, a lot that's said in a seemingly open forum is actually very coded. Bottom line here is, maybe you should fact check before you jump in and start making accusations of vile villainy, you know? A little knowledge might actually help your argument when you go several rounds with your new arch nemesis. The girl who thinks Cathy and I are flaming racists is missing several key pieces of information in this argument that makes her assumptions pretty full of fail).
I guess this post could be called "how skooling on the internet can go wrong."
I will apologize to any actual Roma that I might have offended, I'm sorry, I was joking and it was wrong. You can insult me over my own ethnicity back, I've got a lot of experience responding to that. The Roma's proxy voice on the internet can suck my dick, though (
spare_change exempted).
