A little bit earlier, I got an email from
i_naiad about recipes--she lives in a far away land not part of the Americas and would like to recreate Tex-Mex and other regional cuisines she and her cohorts savored whilst amongst our kind. I was discussing beans with her. Now, turn away if lengthy rambling about beans bores you (philistine!).
Wikipedia was invented in hell. I know that for a fact because I shuttle back and forth from there quite routinely, and the demon who invented wiki and I had drinks one very crappy Thursday when I'd broken a nail down to the quick, snapped a shoelace, and lost my house keys. I was surfing wiki trying to discover what names the beans I wanted i_naiad to access went by in the Commonwealth. I know for a fact that beans are not called by their proper names Other Places (here I will crush and oppress people not from the Americas by saying beans come from here, so their proper names are the ones we call them).
Anyway, once again I was sucked into the hell vortex known as wikipedia and landed on this lamecore entry: Hoppin' John Was this nonsense written by a food historian or just someone dumb? Let me be long winded about nothing now! For starters, in my experience pigeon peas aren't the same thing as what I know of as black eyed peas. For another, I've never heard of this Skippin' Jenny thing in my life. Also, I've only really heard old (and here I mean REALLY FUCKING OLD) people ever use the term Hoppin' John in a genuine way--otherwise it's sort of used as in a joking way because when people talk about beans and peas in regions where it's a staple of the diet you use the name of the beans/peas or just say "beans" or "peas." This is all really nit picky, but we all have our issues.
It's weird how I feel really personal about some food items and get really annoyed when people get the crap wrong. I suppose it's natural since it's so fundamental to life. Personally, I prefer speckled butter beans and field peas w/ snaps (field peas to me are the little green variety) and loathe crowder peas (I get really pissed off when I go eat supper at one of my relatives' and the peas are crowders!!!! I misbehave and take it as a personal insult!).
Anyway,
i_naiad is looking for authentic Mexican/Tex-Mex/Southern food, you got some recipes? Drop by (Caribbean recipes also accepted as those are *my* favorite.)
