Fess up, who writes Idolator?
This really reads to me like a "wink-wink" sort of "oh, look at these weirdos! Of which I really am NOT one, but aren't they tragically cute and stuff?" sort of insider's apology for bandom than an actual outsider's WTF?! analysis.
I suppose it only proves the point that the convergence culture is here whether we want it or not, and that's only natural when so many people in fandom write for a living/sort of living. Bandom is sort of the killer ap of marketing strategy, and it's really savvy of Those Guys to use all the free publicity to their own ends. It's sort of annoying to me, though, that BNF of all BNFs Pete Wentz is coopting our entire subculture to a certain extent, though. I mean, on the one hand, more power to him--my fl is a clusterfuck of free advertising for Panic pretty much nonstop now--but on the other hand, the kind of attention that bandom has brought fandom is a bit out of hand.
I think the Idolator chick is probably someone on my fl with a grudge, which, you know, amusing.
