syncope: (music as a way of life)

This is an interesting discussion from my fl about Pete being the default pov of FOB fandom. I'm not sure I agree totally, because I think that it's probably 50/50 split Pete/Patrick where some people view Pete as the beloved and Patrick as themselves, the lover, and half the other way around. Wanna discuss it? (This is postulating, obvs, that the number of people who identify w/ Andy or Joe is negligible. Is that a false assumption? I don't see a lot of Andy-centric or Joe pov stories, does that make me isolated in a weird part of the fandom?)

Gossip Girl Guide to NYC This is written in a very strange style. What's with all the trailing...? It's entertaining, though. I've read several of the books now, and they're the best sort of trash. I recommend them. I tried to FORCE Julia to read them, but she resisted me with violence (and cookies).

The Economist w/ their usual doom and gloom. This time about the music industry. None of this is earth-shattering or new. I think anyone who's been paying attention knows all of this. It's interesting to see The Man finally take some notice here, however. I'd like to add that this article doesn't address (because people who read this publication don't care) that part of the move here from the old model of music-consumption to what we have now is the trend amongst consumers to want perceived access to the artists or at least second-hand perceived access. Many people would rather consume the music of any band who is accessible than a band who is *famous*. It's the scene building and social networking that matters right now. Sony can't provide that. Music bloggers can to a certain extent (through second-hand access). The top-down model is strangling itself. It wouldn't be all that hard for the people with the money to establish small, "indy" labels and promote artists like the minors and do it *more successfully* because they have THE MONEY. It's not even like the current trends are new or revolutionary--DIY is an old term, y'all. The industry is killing itself, which isn't bad for anyone, really, except the people invested in that system. It's not even bad for artists considering what happens to most of them once they get signed.

Language Log post of hilarity about Chinese translation software and how it's, er, flawed. Learn Mandarin, people! <---my advice, let me give you it.

Scroll down in the comments for bizarre and hilarious trolling on a food blog. What. The. Hell. My favorite commenter is the "You Americans all eat unhealthy food!" person. Er, how about that crisps consumption in the UK, spazz?

I may have put this link up before, but it bears repeating. Feed Me Bubbe Video podcast of a guy recording his grandma cooking. She is AMAZING. I want to live next door to her.
