syncope at 03:05pm on 04/08/2007Because of an off-handed comment by JJ, I just spent a good little span reading up on the history of rice cultivation.
JJ: Oh, what did people do before they had rice?
Me: There was such a time? *ponders*
JJ: Did the Romans eat rice?
Me: *makes crack about garum*
Considering that rice is the number one food crop in the world, it’s somewhat striking how few articles I could find on this topic. It’s really annoying. I wonder if it’s because they aren’t written in English.
The answer to this mystery of the universe is that there *was* rice in ancient Rome and that they probably *did* put garum on it. THE HORROR!
